Nick Cave: The Exhibition
Following the success of the Kylie Minogue exhibition two years ago, the Arts Centre has launched an exhibition on another of australia's great musical icons - Nick Cave. But where the Kylie show worked because it was like a trip around the V&A, being mainly a textiles show with all of of her stage and video costumes on mannequins, the Nick Cave show fails because, like the man himself, its a very literary show. I love Nick Cave. His music is dark and wonderful, as are his novel and film scripts. But I'm not muso enough to appreciate sheets of handwritten lyrics. Songs are meant to be sung and heard, not read. Nor do I care what books are on the shelf of his study. The section that saves it, is the photography corridor. The shots are beautiful and from a number of leading rock photographers. The man has style, enough in his current moustachioed Grinderman phase. worth the entry fee of zero for these alone.
Oh dear. I think I might be just nerdy enough to appreciate that show. I love seeing what books other people have on their bookshelves ... for most of us it's like the most vulnerable indication of what kind of person we wish we were. (For the record, the bookcase in my study is overflowing with literary classics; another bookcase - in the hall - is for the trashy popular stuff).
ReplyDeleteGood system - ours are organised by height and the nicest combination of spine colours.
ReplyDeleteGood job I gave up being a librarian.
